CASE STUDY: Palo Alto Medical Foundation, a Sutter Health Affiliate

Highlighting the human touch brought a medical foundation’s annual report to life.


The client:
Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), part of Sutter Health, is a not-for-profit health care organization dedicated to enhancing the health of people in its communities. Rated as one of California’s top medical groups, PAMF’s more than 900 physicians conduct over 2 million patient visits a year in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since the 1930s, PAMF has been known not only for its top quality medical care, but for its innovative research and community education programs, all funded by donor gifts.

The challenge:
Beginning in 2014, we were enlisted to provide integrated creatives services to assist in developing and delivering a new look and feel for PAMF’s annual report. The goal: To better reflect the quality, personal care and expertise that PAMF is known for, and to engage and motivate donors.

The strategy:
Like many nonprofits, the annual report is the key, lasting communication piece that helps drive engagement and support, showcases projects and directions, and thanks the generous donors for their gifts and involvement. It makes people feel valued and part of something important and bigger than themselves.

Our approach: Create a precedent piece that reflected PAMF’s approach, values and community. Our designers and writers crafted a beautiful, refined, modern and very personable annual report through the use of contracted photography, strong typography and personal stories in a visual structure that reinforces the precision that is part of what makes PAMF excel. A fresh mixture of infographics, letters and statement pieces blended traditional annual report features with an editorial piece with human interest appeal. The redesigned annual report had heart—just like the organization it represented.

Donor dollars were higher than the previous year.
